Living history

Built in 1880-1881 by the local builders Watkin and Ettingshausen, the four front rooms were first occupied by Thomas Tulloch, his wife and five daughters.

A series of officers in charge of the harbour, who controlled Kiama's contact with the outside world, used the cottage as their home and office for almost a century.

They were in charge of all aspects of controlling the harbour - mooring, navigation lights, fees, shipping reports, weather reports - even the lighthouse!

The Cottage today

In 1978, the last pilot, A. W. (Joe) Triffitt retired and the cottage became empty and derelict. Coming to the rescue, Kiama & District Historical Society took over the cottage as their headquarters in 1983.

With generous support and with the tireless efforts of Historical Society members, the Cottage is open as a centre for the people of Kiama to be proud of.

Discover Kiama’s history from Aboriginal times, through cedar gathering and agriculture, to quarrying and tourism. Hear stories of shipwrecks, the famous Blowhole and local heroes such as Oscar-winning sensation Orry-Kelly. Be guided and informed by local volunteers
